Report of a survey of a military road from Mendota to the junction of the Big Sioux with the Missouri, together with the instructions issued to Captain Reno by the chief of topographical engineers, 1853-1854.

Typed copies of J. L. Reno's report and related letters and documents from the United States War Department and the Bureau of Topographical Engineers. In his report, Reno describes the features of the areas he passes through in Iowa and the Minnesota Territory, and gives details of the survey of the military road. Preceding the copies of the documents and the report is a handwritten interpretive essay by Dorothy Heinemann, and her handwritten annotations are interfiled with the report.
